Pepper spray at Merrimack Outlets, shoplifting incident – NBC Boston

Two people from Massachusetts were caught shoplifting at two stores at the outlet store in Merrimack, New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon and reportedly did not give up without a fight.

Merrimack police said Maryah Williams of Boston and Lasonia Watler of Brockton were arrested and face several charges following the incident, which occurred at around 3:45 p.m. at the Merrimack Premium Outlets.

Officers were initially called to the stores because of a theft at the Polo store. After a brief search, officers found the suspected thieves at the American Eagle outlet and saw that Williams and Watler were carrying merchandise that had been stolen from both stores, police said.

One of the two immediately began emptying her shopping bags to hide the stolen goods, police said.

When officers attempted to arrest the two suspects, they allegedly began to resist officers.

Williams kicked an officer in the stomach, police said. While an officer attempted to handcuff her, she managed to pull out a can of pepper spray and spray the spray into the officer’s eyes and into the air in the store, hitting the other officer and other customers inside the American Eagle.

Watler also resisted officers and attempted to pull out her own pepper spray, but was stopped from firing it.

Both officers involved were evaluated and treated by Merrimack Fire Department and EMS. All other customers at the store who were exposed to pepper spray were offered medical treatment but declined, police said.

According to police, both Williams and Watler were eventually taken into custody, but they continued to resist and “yelled obscenities and racially insensitive slurs” in public, causing disruption to other shoppers.

Williams is charged with receiving stolen goods, attempted second-degree assault and tampering with evidence. She is also charged with simple assault x2, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace and possession of tools to remove theft detection devices.

Watler is charged with the serious offense of receiving stolen goods as well as the minor offenses of resisting arrest or detention, attempted assault on a police officer, disturbing the peace and possession of tools for removing theft detection devices.

Both Williams and Watler are being held at the Hillsborough County Department of Corrections and are scheduled to appear in Merrimack 9th District Court on Monday. It was not immediately clear if either had an attorney.
