According to the operations center, a caller reported to the police shortly after 5:45 p.m. that a person had been hit by a train.

Authorities responded to the BART station in downtown Berkeley, where one person was pronounced dead Wednesday evening.

According to the BART website, “BART service between North Berkeley and MacArthur has been suspended due to a serious medical emergency.”

BART is working on a plan to restore service.

Update, 6.35 p.m. In a prepared statement shortly after 6:30 p.m., BART confirmed that one person died in a possible collision with a BART train in downtown Berkeley on Wednesday evening.

BART said the person was not in the track area, but was “near the track area” as the train approached.

The agency does not suspect any third-party negligence.

Limited BART service between North Berkeley and MacArthur stations has resumed, but the BART station in downtown Berkeley remains closed, BART said.
