Petrol prices: Lowest level in months, another day of price reductions at the pumps

Gasoline prices fell again on Monday, as the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline fell to $3.351, according to AAA. That’s down from last week’s average price for a gallon of regular gasoline, when it was $3.411, and from a month ago, when it was $3.519 per gallon. The price of gasoline on Monday in the week before Labor Day weekend, traditionally considered the last weekend of summer, was much lower than the price of gasoline on Memorial Day weekend, considered the first weekend of summer.

Gas prices remain a major issue ahead of the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to run for re-election, Vice President Kamala Harris, the current Democratic presidential nominee, must outline how she will address the country’s high gas prices and energy costs and how both will affect the economy and people’s finances.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, they have fallen in recent weeks and months. However, gas prices are still significantly higher than they were during former President Donald Trump’s administration.

Washington, DC

Gasoline prices fell in the nation’s capital on Monday, continuing a trend from last week. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Washington, DC, is $3.602 to start the workweek. That’s down from last week, when the price was $3.668 per gallon, and from the previous month, when it was $3.709. Prices are also much lower in Washington, DC, today than they were last year, when the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.969.

Virginia

On Monday, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Virginia was $3.223. This was below the national average. Similar to gasoline prices in the nation’s capital, Monday’s price of gasoline in Virginia was cheaper than last week, when it cost $3.287. It’s also less expensive than a month ago, when a gallon of regular gasoline in Virginia cost $3.409. Prices are cheaper today than they were a year ago, when regular gasoline cost $3.631 per gallon.

Delaware

Gasoline prices in Delaware are the lowest in the region, at $3.195 on Monday. That’s down from last week, when the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.292. Prices are significantly cheaper than a month ago, when First State residents paid $3.42 per gallon for regular gasoline. Gasoline was much more expensive a year ago, when people in the state paid $3.666 for a gallon of regular gasoline.

Maryland

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Maryland on Monday is $3.283. Similar to gasoline prices in the nation’s capital, the price of gasoline on Monday was lower than last week, when it was $3.37. It’s also less expensive than a month ago, when a gallon of regular gasoline in Maryland cost $3.507. Prices are substantially lower today than they were a year ago, when regular gasoline in Maryland cost $3.74 per gallon.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma is now the state with the cheapest gasoline in the country. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $2.881. That price was slightly lower than Mississippi, where it cost $2.896 per gallon on Monday. Until last week, Mississippi was the state with the cheapest gasoline in the country.

Hawaii

Hawaii remains the state with the most expensive gasoline in the country. The average price of regular gasoline was $4.64 per gallon on Monday. That’s down slightly from the previous week, when gasoline cost $4.656 in the Aloha State, and from the previous month, when regular gasoline cost $4.68 per gallon for Hawaiians.
