Phillies 2-1 Mets (September 15, 2024) Match Report

PHILADELPHIA — JT Realmuto hit a game-winning single with two outs against Edwin Díaz in the ninth inning and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied for the second straight day, beating the Mets 2-1 on Sunday and winning two of three games against New York.

Tyrone Taylor hit a home run in the eighth inning against Cristopher Sánchez, but Buddy Kennedy tied the game in the second half against David Peterson, who set a season record with 7 2/3 innings.

Nick Castellanos hit a one-out single in the ninth inning against Díaz (5-4) and stole second base when Alec Bohm retired. With the score 0-2, Realmuto hit a 99.5 mph fastball over the high outside corner to right-center field for his sixth career walk-off hit.

New York (81-68) began the day in a tie for the final NL wild-card spot with Atlanta (81-67), which played at the Los Angeles Dodgers later Sunday. The Mets, who blew a 4-0 lead on Saturday, lost for just the fourth time in their last 16 games.

Philadelphia (90-59), which holds a large lead in the NL East, reached 90 wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since winning four in a row from 2008-11.

Starting Thursday, the teams will meet four more times in New York.

Mets All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor left the game in the middle of the second inning with back discomfort. Lindor also left Friday’s game in the middle of the seventh inning because of lower back pain and did not play Saturday. He hit a single to center to start the game and had an assist on Trea Turner’s grounder in the bottom half.

José Ruiz (4-1) threw a 1-2-3 ninth.

Sánchez allowed six hits with seven strikeouts and allowed only his ninth home run in 172 innings.

Peterson allowed four hits.

Luisangel Acuña replaced Lindor and went 0 for 3 with one strikeout. Acuña, the younger brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., had two singles in his major league debut Saturday.

Mets pinch-hitter Jesse Winker was ejected by plate umpire Nestor Ceja for arguing after a third strike in the ninth inning.
