Phoenix Sky Harbor builds pedestrian bridge between terminals as travel increases

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — International travel is increasing at “America’s Friendliest Airport,” which means infrastructure improvements are planned for Phoenix Sky Harbor.

One of those additions is a walkway connecting Terminal 3 to Terminal 4, and the airport’s Air Service Development Manager told Arizona’s Family that construction is underway.

Currently, the airport offers nonstop flights to 25 international destinations. Since Terminal 4 is the only terminal with customs, travelers with a stopover in another terminal, such as Terminal 3, must use the PHX Sky Train.

According to travel expert Peter Greenberg, Sky Harbor competes with other airports of similar size in the West, such as Las Vegas and Denver, all of which have only one terminal for international flights.

“Phoenix is a perfectly located airport for nonstop flights; long-haul flights to Paris and London and other parts of Europe,” Greenburg said. “The planes being delivered today are more fuel efficient and are more efficient on long-haul flights, allowing Phoenix to become a truly international airport. But the terminals and customs facilities were never designed to handle this kind of load.”

And airport officials say Sky Harbor is not worried about the increase in international traffic.

“Phoenix Sky Harbor has one of the shortest customs and security wait times in the country,” said Lexie Van Haren, Sky Harbor’s Air Service Development Manager. “So our passengers can quickly transfer from international to domestic flights.”
