Network railwayPictures show what a Victorian train station will look like after a £140 million renovation.
Darlington station is currently undergoing extensive renovations. One of the works is to build a pedestrian bridge that will lead through an opening in the roof of the building.
Mark McIntosh of infrastructure company AECOM said preserving the heritage of the listed building was important to the redevelopment project.
“The beauty of the station’s original design was a constant source of inspiration for our designers,” he said.
As part of the work, a new reception building and a parking garage will be built at the station.
The station will also receive two new platforms and new stairs and elevators will be built inside.
Network railwayLuke Espin of Network Rail said: “While it is great to see work really progressing in Darlington, sometimes it is difficult to see beyond the hoardings and construction sites.
“These new images do just that and we are delighted to share them with passengers and local communities so they can see what we all intend to do with this £140 million project to improve rail travel for the future.”
The station expansion is a partnership project between Network Rail, Tees Valley Combined Authority, station operator LNER, Darlington Borough Council and the Department for Transport.
The Tees Valley Combined Authority has invested £36 million in building the new hall and car park. Work is nearing completion and will be completed in the coming months.
Network Rail and the Department for Transport have invested £98 million in building the bridge, as well as new platforms, tracks and signalling systems.
Ben Houchen, Mayor of Tees Valley, said: “This project is really important to reduce journey times and ensure we get more services both here and further afield to improve access to these well-paid jobs.”
