DEPTFORD – Sometimes one restaurant closes and another opens.

PJ Whelihan’s Pub + Restaurant is opening its newest location here at the Deptford Landing Shopping Center, its first new location in New Jersey in nearly 20 years, the company announced.

The Deptford location is where the now-closed Joe’s Crab Shack was at 2000 Clements Bridge Road. It will be PJ Whelihan’s sixth location in the state; all are in South Jersey. The chain has more than two dozen locations in total.

The opening is planned for October. PJ Whelihan’s will hold job fairs for all positions every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday starting August 27, a press release said.

Interested applicants can apply online in advance or attend open interviews on site over the three days from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of opening a new restaurant is building a dedicated team that loves what they do and whose passion is reflected in every interaction with customers,” said Jessica Breslow, CEO of PJW Restaurant Group, in a company press release. “We look forward to welcoming guests and establishing ourselves as a go-to destination in the area.”

Joe’s Crab Shack closed on May 26 and was the last Joe’s Crab Shack in the state.

PJ Whelihan’s offers a varied menu and is especially known for its chicken wings, for which you can choose from 11 sauces.

Speaking of wings, PJ Whelihan’s was known for providing wings for the Wing Bowl, an annual wing-eating contest held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The Wing Bowl’s last competition was held in 2018.

The restaurant also offers its own PJ Copper Lager, brewed by Victory Brewing Company.

“We’re not just opening a new restaurant, we’re expanding within the New Jersey community,” added Breslow. “We look forward to getting to know our neighbors and establishing ourselves as a place where everyone feels at home.”
