PlayStation cancels new game “Concord”, refunds players’ money

PlayStation will take its new live services game Concord, developed by Firewalk, offline this Friday and refund players just two weeks after its August 23 release.

The team-based first-person shooter game is said to have attracted a historically small audience during its initial availability on PlayStation 5 and PC, with third-party PC-based gaming data site SteamDB showing 30 current in-game players at release time on Tuesday.

In Concord, often compared to the popular multiplayer shooter Overwatch, players assemble a crew of freegunner space outlaws from the starship Northstar to play online matches between two teams of five members each. With so few people playing Concord, it became very difficult to find suitable opponents during the game.

“Concord fans – we’ve listened closely to your feedback since Concord launched on PlayStation 5 and PC and want to thank everyone who has taken the journey aboard the Northstar,” wrote Ryan Ellis, game director at Firewalk Studios, in a blog post published by PlayStation on Tuesday. “Your support and the passionate community that has formed around the game have meant the world to us. While many qualities of the experience have resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects of the game and our initial launch have not resonated as we intended. As such, at this time we have decided to take the game offline starting September 6, 2024 and explore options, including ones that better reach our players. While we determine the best path forward, sales of Concord will cease immediately and we will begin offering a full refund to all players who purchased the game on PS5 or PC.”

According to PlayStation, customers who purchased “Concord” on PlayStation Store or through PlayStation Direct will receive a refund via their original payment method, while refunds on Steam, Epic Games Store and for physical copies will be processed via the respective digital storefronts and retailers. After the refund, players will lose access to the game.
