Pokémon trading card store reportedly contained million worth of meth

A Pokémon Trading Card Game store in Hong Kong was found to have over a million dollars worth of methamphetamine (commonly known as crystal meth) hidden in its warehouse.

As GameSpot reported, the South China Morning Post announced that a 28-year-old man had been arrested after five kilograms of crystal meth were allegedly discovered in an “employee-only area” of a Pokémon card shop.

The store, located in the residential area of Hung Hom, hosted Pokémon card tournaments, which teenagers and children attended to play Pokémon TCG with friends. However, police confirmed that no child or teenager was involved in the purchase of the crystal meth.

“Keeping such a large quantity of narcotics in a place that teenagers and children can visit is irresponsible and scandalous behavior, which also increases the potential risk of teenagers and children accidentally coming into contact with illegal drugs,” said Liong Chun-Hin, inspector of the Hong Kong Drugs Bureau.

Perhaps inspired by Team Rocket, Pokémon cards have long been the target of criminal activity, but mostly by thieves trying to steal them.

Tokyo police reported an unprecedented number of trading card thefts in the second half of 2022, while an independent game store in Minnesota had around $250,000 worth of Pokémon items stolen in February of that year. A month later, also in Tokyo, a man was arrested for allegedly launching a literal robbery to steal the valuable cards.

A trading card store in California took advantage of the situation and posted a video of thieves stealing 35,000 Pokémon cards from them in January 2024, mocking them for not knowing what to take.
