Police release shelter for Salt Lake Plaza Hotel, no danger

SALT LAKE CITY — Police gave the all-clear after the hazardous materials team determined on Friday afternoon that suspicious luggage posed no danger to residents of the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel.

Salt Lake City Police spokesman Brent Weisberg said hotel staff reported a suspicious incident involving luggage on the ground floor around 3 p.m.

When police arrived, Weisberg said, they evacuated the north side of the hotel and set up a shelter in the rest of the building.

According to Weisberg, a technician from the hazardous materials team examined the object, concluded that it posed no danger to the public, and gave the all-clear.

According to police, surveillance footage showed a man leaving the luggage outside the hotel, “manipulating it in a suspicious manner” and then running away. Police said the luggage contained only personal items and were searching for the man.
