During the search, residents were denied access to the complex.

The nearby Dougherty Elementary School was also cordoned off while police searched for the suspect. The lockdown was lifted shortly before 4 p.m.

Police said they are still looking for the suspect and are keeping the victim’s identity secret.

Sandra Cardenas has lived in the complex for three years.

“I was just shocked because we are normally a quiet community and live near an elementary school. I never thought an incident like this would happen here,” Cardenas said.

According to city data, fewer than a handful of murders have been reported since 2014: two in 2020 and two in 2022.

“I would say that everyone is coming home from work and they don’t expect to be confronted by police when they enter the complex. And then when you get a message from the apartment complex that there was a fatal accident here during the day, it’s pretty unbelievable,” Cardenas said.
