Popular Italian family restaurant files for bankruptcy

Just because Italian restaurant chain Buca di Beppo has filed for bankruptcy does not mean the chain has to close its remaining branches.

The Italian-American eatery, known for its kitschy decor and large portions, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Dallas, Texas, on August 5, Reuters reported.

Although Buca di Beppo closed 12 locations in July before filing for bankruptcy, the Orlando, Florida-based company intends to keep its current locations open. The problems facing the family-friendly restaurants are related to a decline in sales since the beginning of 2021, Community Impact reports, as well as rising food and labor costs.

“Buca di Beppo has been a favorite gathering place for celebrations and unforgettable meals for many years, and we are excited to enter this next phase of our brand’s history,” Buca di Beppo President Rich Saultz said in a statement.

Buca di Beppo has 44 stores in 14 states, including several in Texas and Florida. The chain previously had stores in Louisiana, which have since closed.

The first location of Buca di Beppo was in the basement of a Minneapolis, Minnesota, apartment building in 1993. The restaurant was initially called Buca Little Italy, but was renamed Buca di Beppo in 1996, the Laredo Morning Times reported.
