Porter Robinson kicked off the opening weekend of his highly anticipated SMILE! 😀 world tour, spanning his 10+ year career, with two nights in Boston at MGM Music Hall at Fenway Park and a show last night at Forest Hills Stadium in New York.
Divided into three main acts, Porter began the evening with performances of his entire latest studio album SMILINGwhich was released on July 26. Porter opened the concert with hits like Knock Yourself Out XD and Is there Really No Happiness. To highlight the theme of his album, SMILE!A virtual pink city skyline was projected behind him, a reference to his music video “Cheerleader,” which has been viewed 4.6 million times on YouTube.
For the second act of the night, Porter’s 2021 release Nourish took center stage, playing fan favorites like Everything Goes On, Look at the Sky, Get Your Wish and more. The use of colorful lights and lasers adds a dynamic layer to the concert experience. The way the set adapts to each song shows the thorough thought and attention that went into this creative process.
This August marked the tenth anniversary of Robinson’s debut album. Worlds which took center stage in the third act and played hits such as Sad Machine, Goodbye To A World, Divinity and more. Porter’s production captivated the audience and his live band delivered a rousing performance throughout the evening.
Porter Robinson began the encore with one of his most famous hits, Shelter, which has been streamed over 200 million times on Spotify. The show closed with an electrifying performance of the artist’s personal favorite song, Russian Roulette, with lyrics pieced together from fan comments, social media, and headlines about himself, adding a personal touch to the fan experience and allowing the audience to hear along. The overall production skillfully captures the message of each of Porter’s albums, and includes vibrant and haunting visuals that blend seamlessly with each song.
