Power plant sold by QVC recalled after cause of death

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 5,740 portable power stations after the devices reportedly started several fires, including one that resulted in the death of a 79-year-old Florida man.

According to the CPSC, the Halo 1000 portable power stations were sold for between $1,000 and $1,300 from October 2021 to March 2022. They were sold on QVC as well as ZAGG and ACG. According to the CPSC, the lithium-ion batteries in the devices can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards that can cause serious injury or death.

The Florida man who died reportedly suffered smoke inhalation after one of the devices started a fire. The CPSC said the devices also caused four other fires, injuring two people.

The products are power banks with high-capacity lithium-ion batteries, three USB-A charging ports, one USB-C fast-charging port, three AC outputs, two DC outputs, a DC jack, an LCD display, a built-in floodlight and a foldable handle, the CPSC said.

The devices have the model number PS-1000.

Owners are being urged to register the devices online to receive replacements. In the meantime, owners are being urged to stop using the products immediately and cut off the power cord. The CPSC also said the devices should not be thrown in the trash because they contain dangerous lithium-ion batteries.
