Preview | Rapids travel east for Leagues Cup third place match against Philadelphia Union

The Colorado Rapids will travel cross country to face the Philadelphia Union in a third-place match in the 2024 Leagues Cup on Sunday, August 25. Kickoff at Subaru Park is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. MT (Apple TV – MLS Season Pass, Altitude Sports Radio 950AM).

Both sides will be looking to avenge their recent defeats in the tournament’s semifinals, with a lot still at stake. The winner of the match will secure the third and final spot in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup, which the Leagues Cup offers.

Despite their semifinal loss, the Rapids had had an admirable tournament run to that point. The club beat four Liga MX teams in a row, including a quarterfinal loss to top-ranked Club América. The Rapids also picked up consecutive regular-time and shootout victories against Club León, FC Juárez and Deportivo Toluca FC. The four straight victories marked the first time an MLS team had ever done so against Liga MX in Leagues Cup play.

After an impressive run, Colorado’s Leagues Cup final hopes were dashed against LAFC at BMO Stadium on Wednesday. The home team scored four goals to advance to the final against Philadelphia’s previous opponents, the Columbus Crew.

The Union also lost away this Wednesday in a 3-1 match at Lower.com Field. Columbus took an early lead and Philadelphia eventually tied it, but the Crew’s attack was too strong and they scored two more goals to secure their place in the final.

The Eastern Conference side has also overcome many challenges in this tournament so far, beating top teams on their way to the third-place match. The club came through its group after a win over Charlotte FC and a draw with Liga MX side Cruz Azul. In the knockout rounds, Philadelphia beat CF Montréal, FC Cincinnati and Mazatlán to secure its place in the last four with a chance of qualifying for the Concacaf Champions Cup.

That will be the 15th.th This was the first time these two teams faced each other in their history. The all-time record is 4-6-4.

Rapids captain Keegan Rosenberry returns to Philadelphia, where he spent the first three years of his MLS career. As a member of the Union, the defender played 6,884 minutes in 80 appearances, scoring three goals and six assists.
