Providence man sentenced to 14 years in prison for shooting teenage store clerk

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Providence man was sentenced to 14 years in prison Friday after prosecutors found he shot and killed a teenage store clerk in the city.

In January, 21-year-old Emmanuel Narcisse was found guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and illegally carrying a pistol.

“We should all feel reasonably safe at work, and yet this victim was nearly killed by a criminal with access to a gun,” said Attorney General Peter Neronha. “The defendant used a firearm to break up a fight, and fortunately the victim survived, allowing investigators to now pursue justice. I want to thank the Providence Police Department and the prosecutors in my office for their hard work and cooperation in this and countless other cases.”

During the trial, prosecutors proved that Narcisse shot the 18-year-old store clerk in the leg at GI Joe’s convenience store on Smith Street on October 1, 2020.

The victim told officers he was working at the store when two people came in and one left without paying for a drink. Prosecutors said the victim told officers he confronted the man outside the store and a struggle ensued between the three men. Then two more people joined the fight, one of whom shot the store employee in the leg, shot at the victim’s car and then fled.

Surveillance footage confirmed the victim’s version of events. Investigators identified the defendant from both surveillance footage and witness statements, ultimately leading to Narcisse’s arrest on December 20, 2020.

“I want to thank the men and women of the Providence Police Department for their tireless work in bringing violent criminals to justice,” said Providence Police Colonel Oscar Perez. “I hope this verdict serves as a deterrent to others who seek to harm our community members. I applaud everyone involved in this case and am grateful for this resolution.”
