Providence Place Mall turns 25, while the space’s long-term future is unknown

PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) — Providence Place Mall turned 25 years old on Tuesday.

The mall opened in August 1999, but the long-term future of the space is uncertain.

It is currently home to many stores, including Macy’s, Old Navy and Boscov’s, as well as restaurants such as PF Changs, The Cheesecake Factory and the newly opened Fogo de Chao.

“Honestly, I think this mall has evolved more than most malls, with new dining options in the courtyard,” said Rhode Island resident Jada Jones.

Some people tell ABC 6 News they come for the activities the mall offers at places like Dave & Buster’s and Level99.

“A lot of shopping is done online these days and no one actually comes here. They might come for games or something, but not for actual clothes,” said shopper Sophia Milner.

Mall visitor Thomas Lacombe said it was his first visit to Providence Place in five years and he does his shopping online instead.

“Shopping is not possible in the mall,” said Lacombe. “It’s too expensive, everything is too expensive, wages don’t match the prices, it’s too much.”

A spokesperson for Mayor Brett Smiley’s office said in a statement to ABC 6 News: “The current tax agreement with Providence Place Mall expires in 2028. We currently have no active requests for an extension or new agreement. The Mayor will re-evaluate the potential for a new agreement that reflects the city’s long-term economic goals at that time.”
