Providence Police Arrest Man for Burglary and Kidnapping of Elderly

Providence police said they have arrested a person they believe is responsible for a burglary and kidnapping of an elderly person.

According to a Providence spokesman, the incident occurred in another Rhode Island community.

Coventry police told NBC 10 News that the incident began Saturday evening.

According to officials, a chase took place shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday.

In several communities, including Burrillville and on I-295, police reported seeing a stolen Buick Encore.

The suspect vehicle was later found unoccupied on Kinfield Street in Providence.

Police said they found the suspect hiding in a basement on Kinfield Street and arrested him there.

NBC 10 spoke to the homeowner, who said she met the suspect on an online dating site about a week earlier.

The homeowner said she was not home at the time of the break-in, but said her 21-year-old son was upstairs and suffered a shock when the light from police flashlights flooded her living room.

Police have not released the identity of the suspect or the condition of the elderly victim.

The man is now facing charges and will stand trial at Kent District Court on Monday.

NBC 10’s Sam Read and Erin Coogan contributed to this report.
