Public can vote on name of Lakewood’s new park – Shaw Local

After reviewing more than 200 proposals, the Crystal Lake Park District has opened a public vote to name a new park in Lakewood.

The board has selected four names for public voting. According to a press release, voting is open until 5:00 p.m. on August 16. Only one vote is possible per IP address.

The options are:

  • Buttonwood Park
  • Haligus Park
  • Lakewood Meadows
  • Lakewood Park

Groundbreaking for the 10-acre park on Haligus Road is scheduled for this year and completion is expected by spring 2025. The park, which is estimated to cost about $4.6 million, will be located south of the Village of Lakewood’s public works department.

The new park was funded by several grants, including a $600,000 grant from the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development program last year. There was also a $162,000 grant awarded last fall from GameTime, Cunningham Recreation and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association that will help fund equipment for two playgrounds.

Plans for the new park include pickleball courts, shelters, a wading pool, a basketball court, soccer fields, a hammock area, a pollinator garden and walking trails, said Amy Olson, director of park planning and development for the Crystal Lake Park District.

Two playgrounds will target different age groups; one is for children ages 2 to 5, the other is geared toward children ages 5 to 12. Each playground will have accessible features that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, including a carousel and rocking chairs, Olson said.

Construction will be split into two phases, with a playground, paved path, ping pong table, checkerboard picnic tables, Baggo court, wading pool and educational garden at the top of the list, according to district documents.

The winner will be announced on September 6 following a review by the Board of Trustees, the press release states.

Voting can be done on the park district website: crystallakeparks.org/Name_Your_Park_Contest.
