“Pulling For Honor” by Old Glory Honor Flight returns to Appleton Airport

“Pulling For Honor” by Old Glory Honor Flight returns to Appleton Airport

GREENVILLE, Wis. (WBAY) – Hundreds of people attended a major Old Glory Honor Flight fundraiser Saturday to support veterans in the program.

About 600 people from across the Fox Valley community came to the Appleton Flight Center to attend the “Pulling for Honor” competition, which aimed to raise over $150,000.

It looked like a tug of war as teams of 20 people each tried with all their might to pull a FedEx Cargo plane in a competition for charity.

“It’s something we really enjoy,” said Terri Marquardt, a lab technician on Team Encapsys. “We have a lot of fun. We’re a bunch of scientists, but we all have fun doing it. It’s a great cause and we’re happy to support it.”

This purpose is to provide a free trip to Washington, DC, so that veterans can view the monuments erected in their honor.

Children even had the opportunity to take part in “Pulling for Honor,” where they could participate in a smaller pull track.

Visitors could also view a veterans exhibition with various relics from the Vietnam War.

“We’re excited to bring our exhibit here and show it to people. And hopefully we can get some money for Old Glory Honor Flight,” said Glen Zimmerman, a Vietnam veteran.

As we talk to families and youth about what it means to be part of the military. This also gives more veterans a chance to reconnect and socialize with the community.

“We’ve been in war or in service and we know what it means to support our country,” Glen Zimmerman said. “When we come together and get it out of our system, you know we’ve been in service. We’ve done our job.”

Some would call this fundraiser a success because people are supporting those who served, veterans are connecting, and money is being raised for a good cause.

“It shows how great the Appleton community and the entire Fox Valley community is. You look at this place and there are 30 teams. So it’s businesses, the community, all over the Fox Valley sponsoring and supporting this event,” Terri Marquardt said.

If you were unable to attend the event, you can always show your support by donating to the cause online.
