If you want to get into Thoroughbred racing and have immediate success, purchasing a full brother to a Hall of Fame member is not a bad place to start.

This was the case for Epic Horses on September 9, when they purchased Hip 112, a full brother to the sensational Rachel Alexandra .

“(Epic Horses) loved him from the beginning,” said Shannon Potter, CEO of Town and Country Farm, who served as a consultant to the new ownership group. “That lineage and that family, he checked all the boxes for us, a really good mover.”

Potter did not reveal who his new Las Vegas clients are, but said they are looking to expand their involvement in the Thoroughbred industry. Potter met them on the baseball field while coaching his son’s travel team.

“They are new and excited about the game, the business and the industry,” Potter said. “This is their first time getting involved in thoroughbred racing.”

Handed over by Hill ‘n’ Dale in Xalapa, the son of Medal d’Oro And Lotta Kim was the group’s second purchase and the first at a public auction. Later they added Hip 149, a Into disaster Mare consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency for $350,000. Potter said they are currently only planning to buy a few yearlings.

“(My client) likes to say, ‘I’m not diving, I’m just wading,'” Potter said.

The bay colt is Lotta Kim’s 11th foal, of which eight have raced. Rachel Alexandra defeated boys three times in Grade 1 competition as a 3-year-old, including the 2009 Preakness Stakes (G1) and against older boys in the Woodward Stakes (G1). She was named Horse of the Year in 2009 and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.

Besides Rachel Alexandra, Lotta Kim is the mother of the multiple placed Gladys (Medaglia d’Oro), grade 3-placed Dolphin (Check out Lucky ) and placed bets Wooderson (Great again ).

“It’s probably the last foal of hers that we’ll ever sell,” said Dede McGehee of breeder Heaven Trees Farm. McGehee got Lotta Kim from her friend and customer Dolphus Morrison when he distributed his horses before his death in 2016.

“It’s very special because the mare Lotta Kim belonged to my favorite customer of all time (Morrison).”

When asked about the comparison between the colt and Rachel Alexandra, Potter said: “His head and looks are exactly like her looks. Very good temperament. … Hopefully he can have some of her magic on the track.”

Rachel Alexandra’s brother will likely get his racing preparations from another Hall of Famer, Todd Pletcher. Potter said the owners will race as Epic Racing.

Rachel Alexandra’s granddaughter sells her house to Japan for $1.05 million

The colt was not the only family member to go under the hammer in the Keeneland sale ring on Monday. Rachel Alexandra’s granddaughter Hip 175 was sold for $1.05 million.

From Quality Road The brown filly is the fifth foal from Rachel’s Valentina the Class 1 awarded daughter of Bernardini and Rachel Alexandra.

The filly was consigned by Summerfield by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck as agent for the breeder Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings and was purchased by Hiroshi Fukuda of North Hills.

“She is a beautiful filly, perfect for me,” said Fukuda.

Fukuda said he paid a little more for the filly than he had hoped, but was happy to take her home to Japan, where he believes she will fit in well.
