Raleigh Dream Center | Religious group provides food and school supplies throughout Wake County

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) – On Saturday, the Raleigh Dream Center distributed free food and backpacks filled with school supplies throughout Wake County.

“We do this every month. We distribute food to the community,” said Jermy Porras of the Raleigh Dream Center. “But today is special, we call it our back-to-school party!”

Irene Owens is a volunteer who helped with the food distribution. She told ABC11, “This is about the sixth or seventh time we’ve done this. I love it. This is one of the best community events I’ve ever been a part of. Honestly, I love the Raleigh Dream Center.”

Those standing in long lines in the morning sun were grateful for the help. They told us it was worth the effort

“Because my daughter says, ‘I feel so good,’ because my daughter is very happy,” Monica Reyes said.

This action took place in 15 locations on Saturday and the organizers tried to ensure that no one in need of food or school supplies was left out.

“The food prices are high, so when we can give them backpacks, it’s just an incredible gift,” Porras said. “People accept it with smiles, with tears, with love, with joy. And people were lined up at 5 a.m. this morning to get in here. You know, when a kid goes to school with a new backpack, it just gives them a little more confidence. It helps them feel a little better. It says that the Dream Center loves you, we support you, we pray for you, and we believe in you all school year long.”
