The Indiana Fever got off to a bad start in the postseason with a devastating 93-69 loss to the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.

During the game, the team’s youth and inexperience became apparent, and the Fever suffered one of their most embarrassing losses of the year against a versatile Sun team that included newcomer Marina Mabrey.

Rookie Caitlin Clark, who has been in top form since the Olympic break, delivered a miserable shooting performance that elicited some blunt comments from ESPN women’s basketball commentator Rebecca Lobo on Monday.

“Remember, Connecticut is one of the best defensive teams in the WNBA,” Lobo said. “They attacked (Clark) with different defenders, they gave her different chances, but to be honest, she just missed a lot of good chances.”

“First of all, she had a pretty smart and good game on the court, she took care of the basketball and only had two turnovers on the day. But Caitlin even talked about it in the postgame press conference that she had free and sometimes completely free shots that she just missed. This is an Indiana team that shoots the ball really well from the three-point line, especially since the Olympic break. That wasn’t the case yesterday… You’d be more concerned if she didn’t have good shots.”

Clark hit 4 of 17 field shots and an abysmal 2 of 13 threes for 11 points, four rebounds and eight assists in an overall disappointing playoff debut. The rookie guard was well defended by Suns DeWanna Bonner in the first half and just couldn’t hit her shots in an uncharacteristically poor offensive game. However, as Lobo notes, the Fever can still expect the AP Rookie of the Year to improve her shooting percentage in the next game.

Clark and the Fever will try to keep their postseason hopes alive in Wednesday’s game against the Sun in the best-of-three series.
