McALLEN, Texas – McAllen International Airport (MFE) set a new travel record in July 2024 with a total of 114,694 passengers, an 8.7% increase over the previous record set in June 2024. Total traffic is up 23% in 2024 compared to the previous year, with 70% more flights than the same time in 2023.

“McAllen International Airport has set records for 4 of the last 5 years, but this year we have surpassed them,” said the Honorable Javier Villalobos, Mayor of the City of McAllen. “We are so grateful to see more travelers flying nonstop from McAllen, especially taking advantage of the new nonstop routes.”

Three new airlines and four new nonstop routes from McAllen opened in 2024: Austin via Delta Air Lines, Mexico City via Aeromexico, Cancun via Volaris and Tampa-St. Petersburg via Allegiant Air.

McAllen International Airport experiences high demand for all nine nonstop flights, but especially for flights to Mexico City on Aeromexico, to Austin on Delta and to Dallas on American Airlines. All six MFE airlines not only provide a first-class and comfortable travel experience for leisure or business travelers, but also connect their passengers to world-class destinations and major airport hubs from which they can travel anywhere in the world.

“Our region’s travelers love connecting with the people and places they care about,” said City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, PE. “McAllen International Airport is doing everything it can to make that a great experience.”

In April of this year, MFE received $7.4 million in funding to improve and expand McAllen International Airport, following the growth they experienced in 2023. Now, with MFE seeing incredible growth in 2024 and recently experiencing historic month-over-month traffic increases, the funding couldn’t have come at a better time.

As for the specifics of the improvements, Director of Aviation Jeremy Santoscoy, PE, said the airport is conducting studies to best understand how and where the airport should be expanded.

“We are careful to consider the need and justification for responsible development,” Santoscoy said. “Our stakeholders want to ensure that any decisions related to expansion are made carefully and represent the best options for our travelers and airlines, including those in the future.”
