Red Lobster closes several restaurants in Illinois amid bankruptcy – NBC Chicago

Several Red Lobster restaurants in Illinois will close in the coming days as the company continues its restructuring amid ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.

According to court documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Florida and obtained by TODAY, a total of 23 stores will close nationwide, bringing the total number of closures since the legal proceedings began to 106.

Businesses in Illinois and Indiana affected

According to court documents, Red Lobster will close three of its restaurants in Illinois, including two in the Chicago area.

The Geneva (902 Commons Drive) and Bourbonnais locations will both be closed if the request is approved by a judge.

A third location in Peoria will also close its doors.

The company’s Michigan City restaurant will also be closed as a result of the lawsuit. A full list of affected locations can be found here.

When do the shops close?

Exact dates may vary, but according to court documents, the company has requested that a judge in the case reject the leases by Aug. 31.

How did the company’s insolvency develop?

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year as it struggled with rent and labor costs. In May, it filed paperwork to renegotiate leases at more than 100 locations, including those in Bourbonnais and Michigan City.

While some of these stores, including locations in Bloomingdale and Danville, have already been closed, additional store closures are planned as the restructuring continues.

A total of 106 locations are affected, including 83 that closed earlier this year. The closures have reduced the company’s presence to over 530 restaurants, mostly in the United States and Canada.
