Red Lobster plans to close nearly two dozen more restaurants in the coming days as the bankrupt seafood restaurant chain prepares for a takeover.
The national restaurant chain known for its cheap seafood and Cheddar Bay biscuits plans to give up leases on 23 more locations by Aug. 31, according to a recently filed court document. The closures add to a list that saw Red Lobster close more than 100 locations this summer.
Red lobster Filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May after years of weak growth amid increasing competition from fast-casual chains, high debt and mismanagement.
After the latest streamlining, Red Lobster will have about 500 restaurants. The company is selling to Fortress Investment Group, which recently loaned Red Lobster $100 million to keep the chain running. Fortress also owns Krystal, Logan’s Roadhouse and J. Alexander’s.
Fortress announced Monday that Damola Adamolekun, the former CEO of PF Chang’s, has been named chief executive officer of Red Lobster. A bankruptcy judge in Florida must approve Red Lobster’s plan to exit Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
Founded in 1968 by local restaurant owner Bill Darden in Lakeland, Florida, Red Lobster eventually expanded across the country by offering Americans affordable crab, lobster and other seafood.
