Red Sox end Rafael Devers’ season and recall rookie

BOSTON – The Red Sox ended Rafael Devers’ season on Saturday.

Devers was placed on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation, which will keep him out of the active roster for the remainder of the regular season. The Red Sox recalled catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester, adding an additional roster spot.

Devers posted an incredibly impressive batting average of .272/.354/.516 with 28 home runs and 83 RBI in 138 games — and struggled with shoulder problems for most of the season. In Boston, the problems worsened in the final month of the season, when the 27-year-old sustained the injury while diving for a ball against the Colorado Rockies just after the All-Star break.

Gasper, 28, has played in 10 games for Boston this season since his major league debut, but he had yet to record a hit until his most recent return.

Devers has an average of .205/.295/.329 in his last 42 games.

“I think overall, aside from the injuries, he’s been one of the best hitters, if not the best hitter in the major leagues for two and a half months and he’s been fun to watch,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Saturday. “I know the numbers are numbers on defense, but he’s improved in certain areas… I’m disappointed because he’s basically our offense. He’s the guy. He’s been tough to watch over the last month.”
