Referee: Ja’Marr Chase used “abusive words” against officials in the 4th quarter

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Sunday’s pool report for the Bengals-Chiefs game provides some explanation as to why Ja’Marr Chase was cautioned for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The penalty came in the fourth quarter of the back-and-forth game in Kansas City.

The Bengals were trailing 22-23 and on the rise when Chase was tackled. Chase believed, referee Alex Kemp explained after the game, that the Chiefs defender had executed a hip-drop tackle and should have been penalized for Kansas City.

Fans watching the game could see Chase’s frustration after the tackle as he looked a referee in the face.

According to Kemp, a referee threw a penalty flag because of the “abusive language” Chase used.

“It’s pretty clear,” Kemp said after the game. “It was just insulting a referee. That’s all it was. And there was really no interpretation. I’m not going to repeat what he said, but there was no interpretation of the language he used. Just insulting.”

Chase was asked about the penalty in the locker room after the Bengals’ loss.

His answer: “I don’t talk about it.”

Chase and the Bengals will look to rebound from an 0-2 start when they return home for Monday Night Football against the Washington Commanders.
