ReFuels begins construction of a bio-CNG filling station

ReFuels NV, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of renewable biomethane (bio-CNG) for the decarbonisation of heavy-duty vehicles, has broken ground on a new filling station in Livingston in West Lothian, Scotland. The publicly accessible bio-CNG filling station, branded as CNG Fuels, will enable low-emission transport between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

At full capacity, the Livingston station can fuel 14 trucks simultaneously, allowing it to fuel more than 600 trucks per day with a total capacity of 20 million kilograms of bio-CNG per year. CNG Fuels also operates Scotland’s first publicly accessible renewable biomethane truck fuelling station, which opened near Bellshill in 2021.

“The Livingston station is located right next to several major distribution centres, including Tesco and DHL,” says Philip Fjeld, CEO of ReFuels. “Once operational, it will enable fleet operators and their customers to further decarbonise logistics in Scotland. Bio-CNG is a low-carbon alternative to traditional fossil fuels and is more cost-effective than diesel. As ReFuels develops new sites in line with our long-term plan, we are also receiving additional orders for new Bio-CNG trucks from new and existing customers.”

CNG Fuels’ current UK network of 14 operational stations has the capacity to fuel more than 9,500 trucks per day, representing an annual dispensing capacity of more than 290 million kg of biomethane and potential savings of more than 800,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year compared to diesel. The target of 30 to 40 stations under construction and operational by the end of 2026 represents a total capacity of up to 23,000 trucks per day and more than 650 million kg of biomethane per year.

The Livingston station is owned by a joint venture with Foresight Group. In addition to Livingston, ReFuels is currently building another station in Doncaster in South Yorkshire, one of the UK’s largest logistics hubs.
