Thursday night —

Eisenhower 28, Valley Center 17

Eisenhower used a big defensive stop and a home run late to defeat a Valley Center club that relied on strong defense to keep the game close throughout. It was a solid start for both teams that they can build on. Eisenhower is among the favorites to emerge from the West in Class 5A. Valley Center, which faces a new challenge with a move up to the AVCTL I, is looking to prove it can compete.

Friday night —

Andover Central 37, Hutchinson 7

Andover Central has its sights set on getting back to the Class 4A championship game and making a breakthrough, and even though it’s only been a week, the Jaguars made an early statement with a dominant performance in Hutchinson.

Derby 40, Hays 7

On the way to another 6A title, Derby started with an impressive performance on the road. The Panthers dominated the win by nearly five touchdowns against Hays, one of the stronger teams in Class 5A.

East 48, Height 0

The defending City League champions are off to a strong start looking to repeat that feat and once again advance deep into the Class 6A playoffs. Wichita East started 0-2 last year before turning things around and losing again late in the postseason. In that regard, the Aces are better than they were a year ago.

Goddard 7, Maize 3

The Lions prevailed in a defensive battle between two stronger teams in the region.

Capon 28, Andover 21

After playing in the Class 5A state championship game last year, Kapaun is now adjusting to Class 4A. They expect to return to a similar position in a new class. The Crusaders prevailed in Week 1, but faced an uphill battle against an Andover team that finished 0-9 last season.

Great Bend 28, McPherson 6

Great Bend is the favorite to represent the Class 5A west side in the state championship game in November and has shown early why many are predicting this could be the Panthers’ breakout year. Great Bend is off to a strong start with a crucial road win over McPherson, one of the stronger teams in 4A.

College 22, Wellington 19

Wichita Collegiate edged Wellington in one of the best games of the night, as the Spartans in Class 3A and Wellington in 4A took the first step toward realistic goals for deep postseason runs.

Cheney 38, Holcomb 7

The defending Class 3A champions extended their overall winning streak to 14 with a dominant performance against Holcomb to open the season.

Northwest 34, Bishop Carroll 13

The Northwest Grizzles have bragging rights in the annual season opener, one of the most anticipated games of the early season. In a battle between two schools about a mile apart, Northwest showed off its explosiveness in a three-touchdown victory.

Mais South 56, Newton 20

Maize South, expected to be one of the last teams remaining in Class 5A, was strong on both sides of the ball in the Mavericks’ dominant season-opening win.
