Reno Airport is preparing for a huge rush of Burning Man travelers this weekend

Reno-Tahoe International Airport is preparing for its busiest day in nearly two decades, with more than 20,000 passengers expected to come and go on Sunday because of the Burning Man festival.

According to the airport, this milestone surpasses even recent major holiday travel numbers and marks the highest single-day seat count since August 2005.

The increase in passenger numbers is due to new and returning summer routes as well as the annual Burning Man festival in the Black Rock Desert.

The airport said the record number of travelers will create operational challenges and that various adjustments have been made to meet people’s needs.

The busiest days are expected to be August 23, 25, 26 and September 2.

Burner Express, the airport’s shuttle, will be available starting August 24. Due to ongoing construction, the pick-up and drop-off stations will be located north of the main terminal, as was the case last year.

Starting August 23, there will be an Air Playa information desk to assist Burning Man travelers upon arrival at the airport.

After the event, Burning Man attendees have the opportunity to donate unwanted items and bikes at the Burner Express drop-off location. The airport stated that it is committed to a clean and welcoming environment, so large trash cans are provided for attendees to dispose of unwanted items. Airlines provide bags to cover luggage to protect bag straps from playa dust. Shoe covers are provided at some airport entrances to keep the floor dust-free.

If you are traveling to or from Reno-Tahoe International Airport in the coming days, please allow plenty of time and arrive at least two hours before departure to allow for increased crowds, longer security lines and ongoing construction.
