Renton Highlands Top of the Hill Market badly damaged by explosion

An explosion and fire that broke out in Renton Highlands early Saturday morning severely damaged a grocery store.

Firefighters responded to a report of an explosion at the Top of the Hill Market next to a Chevron gas station on Northeast 4th Street near Jericho Avenue.

When emergency services arrived, large flames were blazing from the roof of the building.

Shortly afterwards, the roof partially collapsed.

Several other fire departments helped extinguish the flames, including the Bellevue, Eastside and Puget Sound fire departments.

Nobody was injured.

The fire leaves several employees unemployed.

In a statement on the store’s website, owners Jackie and Damu Maples thanked the Renton Fire Department, calling them “heroes.”

Under the headline “A setback, but not the end,” they also shared pictures of the damage.

The owners wrote: “As a family business, we have always been proud to be part of this wonderful community and your support means the world to us.”

And continued: “We are committed to rebuilding you, our extended family, and continuing to serve you with the same dedication and care as always.”

Investigators are trying to find out how the fire started.
