Robby Ashford is expected to replace LaNorris Seller as South Carolina‘s starting quarterback for the Gamecocks game against Akron on Saturday, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Sellers suffered a knee injury just before halftime of the Gamecocks’ 36-33 loss to LSU in week 3 and did not fully participate in training this week.
Ashford started the second half against the Tigers, but LaNorris Sellers tried to return to the field. After a three-hit drive, however, it was obvious that Sellers’ ankle was bothering him. Ashford played the rest of the game.

In the loss, Ashford completed two of his four pass attempts for 42 yards. He only managed 11 yards on 11 rushing attempts, many of which were scrambles. He was also sacked three times and recorded two fumbles.
On two drives in the third quarter, South Carolina’s offense had two consecutive three-and-outs and managed just one yard. Meanwhile, LSU’s offense caught fire, managing 175 yards in the third quarter. Overall, LSU outscored South Carolina 20-9 in the second half and walked away with a decisive victory.

After the game, Ashford reflected on the Gamecocks’ offensive mistakes in the third quarter.
“When I got there, we were leading and had a very good defense,” Ashford said. “I felt like we were ahead in that situation, so why risk it? Why not take it on Rocket grinderwho is arguably the best running back in the SEC? Why not feed him? Why not just try to have our O-line out-physically out-perform those guys because we were there the whole game.
“A lot of people can say whatever they want, but I’ve never been in my shoes and never had to go through what I went through. They’re still couch coaches, so I don’t really care what they have to say,” Ashford said. “All those guys can go and say whatever they want, but I have faith and full trust in Coach (Dowell Loggains) and Coach Beamer to do what they want to do. So I’m never going to sit here and argue about it. My job is to go out there and run the offense and do what’s asked of me.”
Robby Ashford has no shortage of experience. South Carolina is the third program Ashford has played for after beginning his college career at Oregon and then transition to Auburn. Ashford came to Columbia, SC, with 10 career starts. Now he has a chance to add another.
South Carolina and Akron will face off on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
