Report: “Multiple teams” inquiring about a trade for Panthers QB Bryce Young

While the Panthers have given up on the Bryce Young experiment, other teams are sensing an opportunity to buy cheaply.

Via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com: “several teams” have inquired about a trade for the first pick in the 2023 draft. Others have been considering the possibility internally since Young was benched for the experienced Andy Dalton.

The Panthers have no intention of trading Young, according to Schefter. However, as we’ve seen time and time again, intentions can change quickly; often, pre-trade discussions are all about getting the best deal possible.

For the Panthers, the best deal is likely to come after the current season, when the inevitable list of teams looking for new quarterbacks is completed. However, an injury to a starter can change everything and send the team in need of a quarterback into desperation, giving the Panthers a bigger and better haul.

The Panthers will feel compelled to negotiate the best possible deal for Young, given what they gave up to get him: No. 9 pick in 2023, receiver DJ Moore, second-round pick in 2023, first-round pick in 2024 (who became No. 1 overall) and second-round pick in 2025.

What could they really get at this point? Not a first-round pick. Maybe a second-round pick to replace the one they’ll send to Chicago in the next draft.

Whatever they can or cannot get, the Panthers must do the right thing for Young and trade him. This doesn’t have to happen in the next six weeks and two days (that’s when the 2024 transfer window closes). It should happen on the first day of the 2025 league year, giving him a fair chance to restart his career with a new team.

Young wasn’t too high a pick as the No. 1 overall pick. Many teams would have taken him there. If those teams are willing to attribute Young’s problems largely to the Panthers’ inherent dysfunction, some of those teams will be willing to make a move.

Still, it’s an awkward breakup-style sales pitch from the Panthers.

It’s not his fault, it’s ours.
