According to reports, all signs point to the NFL not investigating the San Francisco 49ers over their handling of the injury to running back Christian McCaffrey, who did not play in Monday’s win over the New York Jets.

Hours before kickoff, it was announced that McCaffrey would be out with a calf/Achilles injury, and Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio noted that backup starter Jordan Mason said after the game that he had learned he would start Friday. That raised questions, though an NFL spokesperson told Florio that the league would not comment on the situation.

With that in mind, Matt Barrows and Amos Morale III of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that there was “no indication that the league has initiated a formal investigation into the situation.”

McCaffrey has been questionable all week, so the situation certainly did not arise out of nowhere.

Still, seeing him inactive so close to game time was a surprise and certainly sent shockwaves through the fantasy and gambling community. And since the NFL’s popularity is so directly tied to the proliferation of fantasy football and gambling, the consternation led to headlines and inquiries about whether the 49ers were under investigation.

For fantasy football managers betting on McCaffrey in the final game of the week, the situation was far from ideal, as the vast majority of running backs were already done. Perhaps a lucky few could get Mason off the waivers list, but many were likely facing a loss.

Fortunately for the 49ers, they emerged victorious from Monday’s game.

One of the main reasons for this is Mason, who rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown on 28 attempts. His impressive performance suggests he could still be part of the team’s rotation even when McCaffrey is healthy again.

San Francisco also relied on the versatile Deebo Samuel for its running plays, who, in addition to his five catches for 54 yards, also made eight runs for 23 yards and a touchdown.

It seems McCaffrey won’t miss much time either, as head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters, “I’m sure he would have played if it had been a playoff game.”

Ultimately, it appears that the 49ers emerged from the situation with a win, without any significant long-term concerns for their star running back and without having to worry about an investigation by the league.
