There is finally a sequel to “The Goonies”.
According to a new report from The Sun, a follow-up to the 1985 cult classic about a group of adventurous children is in the works.
As the outlet reported, it is expected that the actors from the original film will return for the sequel.
The film starred Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Ke Huy Quan and Martha Plimpton.
Several cast members have died, including John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Mary Ellen Trainor, Keith Walker and Lupe Ontiveros.
According to the Sun, filming for the sequel is planned for next year, with a possible theatrical release planned for 2026 or 2027.
“The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but now it’s finally been given the green light to move forward,” a source told The Sun.
“The team is excited about the opportunity to bring the magic of the original film to new audiences,” they added.
The insider also said that since “the youth adventure market is booming,” producers wanted a storyline for the sequel that would resonate with both longtime fans and new viewers.
“The Goonies” was directed by Richard Donner, who died in 2021 at the age of 91.
Steven Spielberg created the story for this classic family film about a group of kids from the Astoria, Oregon neighborhood who embark on a dangerous adventure.
Chris Columbus, who wrote the screenplay for the film, recalled after Donner’s death that the late director called him to talk about a sequel to “The Goonies.”
“He called me and said, ‘You know what we should do? We’ll get on my boat, smoke weed for three days and come up with an idea for ‘Goonies 2,'” Columbus, 65, told Empire magazine in 2021.
“I said to Dick, ‘Well, first of all, I don’t smoke weed. But when I get down, maybe we’ll have a few drinks together and sit on the boat.’ It never happened. And I regret that. Because I would drop everything for that right now.”
Most of the cast of “The Goonies” reunited virtually in Josh Gad’s 2020 web series, during which 77-year-old Spielberg explained why there hasn’t been a sequel yet.
“Every few years we have an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water,” he said.
“The problem is the bar you all have raised for this genre. I don’t think we’ve really managed to come up with an idea that’s better than ‘The Goonies,’ which we all did in the ’80s,” Spielberg added.
