Residents of Geneva are asked to reduce their electricity consumption due to the heat on Tuesday

GENEVA, IL — Geneva residents are asked to limit their electricity usage from 11 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to help reduce the burden on city operations.

Highs of 97 degrees and a slight chance of evening thunderstorms are expected in Geneva on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Patch reported that heat index values of 110 to 115 degrees are possible on Tuesday.

On the afternoons of the warmest summer days, authorities offer residents a voluntary program to reduce electricity load. Those who do not participate will not be penalized and no numbers will be reported or tracked, authorities said.

“With a National Weather Service extreme heat warning in effect, please remember that safety comes first before participating in this voluntary action,” city officials said.

The easiest way to reduce electricity consumption is to adjust the thermostat by a few degrees, run large appliances later in the evening and turn off the lights in empty rooms.

By participating, residents are helping to make Geneva a greener community and keep their own electricity costs low. Officials noted that the city’s power grid “has enough capacity and reserves to serve all customers.”
