Reviews of all new foods at the 2024 Minnesota State Fair

Loon Lake Iced Tea, Underwood St. between Wright and Dan Patch Avs., $5-$7, cash only.

In addition to the official new product, cotton candy iced tea, this new vendor offers a few more flavors: blood orange, blueberry, peach, strawberry, and unsweetened. While we liked that none of them were too sweet, they all tasted watered down. The blueberry was our favorite, but it cost $2 more thanks to a sprinkling of edible glitter.

Pitchfork Sausage, Liggett St. between Carnes and Judson Avs., $18

There’s no level of hunger that could make this pile of pantry ingredients seem original: Tostitos, dollops of rubber duck-colored cheese sauce, possibly forgotten spicy honey. Props for the generous addition of tiny little caramelized onion cubes. We might have forgiven the rest if it hadn’t violated one of the cardinal principles of nacho etiquette: You have to layer the toppings so you don’t end up with a pile of naked chips.

French Meadow, Carnes Av. between Nelson and Underwood Sts., $14

Breaded mushrooms are a staple on many restaurant menus. This shouldn’t have been a problem for the State Fair. The problem started somewhere between trying to pass them off as tentacled creatures and over-frying them until they became a withered, dehydrated thing that was once mushrooms.
