You’re quickly becoming a fan favorite this season. How does it feel to know that you’ve impacted viewers in this way?

It makes me feel good. That is, I never thought that I, my job and my singing for the children would have such an impact on the world.

Were there any entertaining interactions with fans? And if so, what were they like?

I enjoy it as much as – I can’t believe I’m saying this – my fans. People coming from all over to meet me? Yes, I do.
People have come from Michigan to meet me. One of the students did a drawing of me that looked great. It’s all so surreal to me.

You work as a janitor and the school year has started. Do you miss the students?

Yes, I miss the kids and colleagues. But I’m so excited to see what all this will do to me and (my fiancée) Angie after the show.

You’ve covered Journey and Michael Bolton. Which artists would you like to feature next on the show?

While I can’t tell you what my next song is, I can tell you that I love pretty much everything from the 80s.

The judges sometimes give constructive feedback. What is the best advice you have received so far?

Be true to your song choice. I think I did that too. The problem with singing a song straight is that it can sound a bit like karaoke. And believe me, I sing karaoke all the time! So you need to stand out.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to audition for AGT?

Try it! No matter how old you are or what you look like, try it! It’s never too late. Look at me.

What has changed the most in your life since you decided to AGT?

I can’t go through Walmart! (Laughs) My life has changed because I know I inspired people to take small risks.

How do you hope your story inspires others to pursue their dreams?

Take small risks. Kindness and love come above all else.
