The Georgia Department of Health’s Environmental Health Division conducts regular restaurant inspections to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

Below is a list of restaurants in Richmond and Columbia counties that were inspected between August 16 and 23, along with their ratings and, in some cases, the health violations that led to a reduction in those ratings.

Disclaimer: On any given day, a facility may have fewer or more violations than the last inspection. An inspection conducted on a given day may not be representative of general, long-term conditions at the facility. Some more recent follow-up inspections may not be included here.

Inspector’s comments:

  • “Ice machine observed with black and pink deposits. Wiped down. Clean thoroughly and clean more frequently.”
  • “Employees observed wearing jewelry. Make sure only a plain bracelet is worn, no bracelets and/or watches.”
  • “Multiple wet plates stacked over a 3-compartment sink. Make sure dishes are properly air dried before stacking.”
  • “The floors and walls have been identified as needing cleaning. Clean thoroughly and increase cleaning intervals.”

New S&S Cafeteria, 1616 Walton Way: 85

Inspector’s comments:

  • “Chicken and coleslaw in the refrigerator in the salad preparation area were observed above 41°F. Move food to another refrigerator and allow to cool to 41°F.”
  • “Wipes must be stored in the red disinfection bucket.”
  • “Keep garbage container lids closed.”

Jason’s Deli, 2907 Washington Rd., Building 500: 82

Inspector’s comments:

  • “Observed guacamole, mayo, mac & cheese, pico de gallo and salad kept cold above 41 degrees F on the cooler. Kept cold at 41 degrees F or below. Corrected on site, person in charge placed ice under food to lower temperature.”
  • “Red peppers with a best-before date of August 14th and red onions and tomatoes with a best-before date of August 16th observed. Repeated violation. Monitor best-before dates closely. Responsible person has removed expired food from the warehouse.”
  • “Observation: Scoop stored in gravy powder. Observation: Ice cream scoop improperly stored above vending machine. Store scoops away from actual food. Do not store ice cream scoop on dirty surfaces, make room to store ice cream scoops.”
  • “Observed debris and buildup around the condiment area at the self-serve beverage station. Repeat violation. Clean.”

Firehouse Subs, 2930 Peach Orchard Rd.: 80

Inspector’s comments:

  • “It was observed that an employee entered the main kitchen area and did not wash their hands before starting work. When an employee enters the kitchen to start work or returns from the restroom, they must still wash their hands first.”
  • “I have observed food items that do not have a best before date. I have observed an item in the refrigerated section that has been stored past its best before date.”
  • “It was observed that chemicals were not stored in the designated area. Cleaning agents/chemicals must be stored in the designated areas.”
  • “Dead insects observed behind tables and under the hand basin. Remove dead insects after treatment.”

Jerk City Truck, 2147 Eastside Ct.: 70

The August 19 inspection was a follow-up to an August 12 inspection where the restaurant scored 81. The first comment is new. The rest are existing violations from the previous inspection.

Inspector’s comments:

  • “Observation: Jerk marinade is kept cold at above 41°F. Keep refrigerated foods at 41°F or below.”
  • “No Certified Good Protection Manager certification detected. Obtain certification within 60 days of this inspection.”
  • “Discovered a rusted cheese tin sitting on a dry storage shelf past its expiration date. Monitor expiration dates and ensure food is disposed of properly.”
  • “No thermometers for measuring food temperatures or discovered in the refrigerators and freezers. Obtain thermometers for measuring food temperatures.”
  • “In dry storage, rice was observed not to be stored at least 15 cm above the ground. Store all food at least 15 cm above the ground.”
  • “Under the hand/prep sink was found to be not smooth and easy to clean. Build a smooth and easy to clean surface under the sink or replace the materials.”
  • “No thermometers for measuring food temperatures or discovered in the refrigerators and freezers. Obtain thermometers for measuring food temperatures.”
  • “I have noticed buildup in the refrigerator and freezer. Clean. Clean more often to limit buildup.”
  • “No hot water detected at preparation/hand basin. The responsible person has indicated that batteries are required for water heating. Ensure that hot and cold water is available at all times.”
  • “No air gap found under hand/prep sink. Install air gap under sink within 60 days of this inspection.”
  • “Live cockroaches have been observed in refrigerators, freezers and appliances. Contact a licensed pest control professional immediately to get rid of the cockroaches.”
