RM Sotheby’s .5 million Ferrari F50 auction in Monterey sets new world record

RM Sotheby’s causes a stir in Monterey!

To say that Monterey Car Week 2024 was a hit would be a complete understatement. World premieres and record-breaking auctions took place for the first time during the week of exciting festivities. Speaking of auction sales of high-end collector cars, the pros at RM Sotheby’s hit the jackpot on the second night of their flagship Monterey auction, setting a new world record for a Ferrari F50. The 1995 Ferrari F50 took the stage in Northern California and drove the bidding to a whopping $5,505,000. With a starting bid of $2.5 million, the price continued to skyrocket amid intense bidding wars among an excited crowd of collectors and enthusiasts. The massive six-figure sale now puts this example at the top of the list of the most expensive Ferrari F50s ever sold at auction.

The Ferrari F50 is one of the Italian marque’s “Big Five,” which also includes the 288 GTO, F40, Enzo, and LaFerrari. Although the F50 is now considered one of the most sought-after collector cars in the world, it hasn’t always received the recognition it deserves. Since Ferrari launched the 349 cars in July 1997, the owner list has included well-known celebrities such as Mike Tyson, Rod Stewart, 50 Cent, Ferrari collector David Lee, and many more. The Ferrari F50 features a 4.7-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine with Formula 1 technology that delivers an impressive 513 horsepower at 8,500 rpm. When paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, the F50 sprints from 0-60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 202 mph. After RM Sotheby’s set new standards with its Ferrari F50 world record sale, we can’t wait to see what the next example goes under the hammer for.
