Robert Saleh’s funny Joe Staley story underscores Nick Bosa’s dominance – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

How exactly can Nick Bosa’s dominance on the field be described?

Could it be his physical presence? Or could it be the way he details one of his 53.5 sacks?

Of course, there are a handful of ways to do this, but when it came to New York Jets coach Robert Saleh, the former 49ers defensive coordinator opted for a humorous anecdote about Joe Staley.

“I’ve never seen a D-end miss a tackle as many times as he did, especially not as many times as he did,” Saleh said of Bosa on Saturday.

Through his passionate play and unwavering leadership, San Francisco’s No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft has earned his place as one of the NFL’s best edge rushers.

The 26-year-old was selected to the Pro Bowl four times, was named the 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-Pro first team that same year after leading the league in sacks with 18.5 despite only entering his sixth season.

The Ohio State product always had it, and Saleh remembers exactly when the young Bosa started giving Staley problems that the legendary 49er could never solve.

“It was absolutely fascinating,” Saleh added. “I vividly remember during Bosa’s first training camp, Joe Staley just struggled after the first few days.”

“Bosa was all the rage and I was asked about it. I said he’s a rookie; Joe will figure it out. He never did figure it out. No offense, Joe.

“(Bosa) has great hand-eye coordination, strength, can win inside, outside or through you. Great football IQ. He’s a great football player and if you ever see him up close, his thighs are like this podium. Ridiculous.”

Saleh was not wrong then and he is certainly not wrong today.
