Runway at Japan’s Narita Airport closed after emergency landing of US cargo plane

Runway at Japan’s Narita Airport closed after emergency landing of US cargo plane

A runway at Japan’s Narita Airport was closed on Tuesday after an American cargo plane made an emergency landing.

Authorities said one of the airport’s two runways in Chiba Prefecture was closed after an Atlas Air Boeing 747 was forced to make an emergency landing due to a problem with its hydraulic system.

The cargo plane was en route to Los Angeles when the problem became apparent around 1:10 a.m., a Department of Transportation spokesman said.

The runway was closed for around seven hours. The crew of the Atlas Air plane remained uninjured.

“The seven crew members of the Boeing 747 were not injured, but burst tires and damaged wheels were found,” the spokesman said.

At Narita Airport, the “aircraft’s tires were changed.”

However, the emergency landing of the cargo plane did not have a major impact on other flights, authorities said.

The Independent has asked Atlas Air for comment.

Atlas Air’s emergency landing came a day after a Singapore Airlines plane encountered a “technical problem” while landing at Narita Airport. White smoke was reportedly seen rising from the Boeing 787-10’s engine during landing.

Because of the incident involving flight SQ638, the other runway at Narita Airport had to be closed for almost an hour on Monday. There were no signs of fire and no one was injured.

Singapore Airlines later announced that there was a “technical problem with the brakes” when the flight landed.
