Russell Wilson injury update: Pittsburgh Steelers release Friday’s injury report

On Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers released their final injury report before their game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. It will be the Steelers’ first home game of the season.

The Steelers can expect a packed Acrisure Stadium for their Week 3 showdown. Pittsburgh is 2-0 this season with wins over the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos. Justin Fields started as quarterback in the Steelers’ first two games.

It’s unclear whether Wilson will suit up for the Steelers on Sunday if he’s healthy. The 35-year-old quarterback has been a limited participant in practice this week and may not be prepared to play at full speed in a regular-season game.

Head coach of the Steelers Mike Tomlin might be especially hesitant to use Wilson given Fields’ early success this season. Through two games, Fields has completed 30 of his 43 (69.8%) pass attempts for 271 yards and a touchdown without throwing a single interception.

Rex Ryan comments on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback dilemma

Despite Wilson’s illustrious resume, several NFL analysts believe the Steelers should hold on to Fields as quarterback until he gives them a reason not to.

“Look, nothing against Russell Wilson because he’s not healthy right now. So the decision is easy,” Rex Ryan said of the situation and believes Fields should move forward. “I’ve always called this guy the future because I love the ability of this guy here. But the future is a whole series of nows, and right now he’s allowed to play again, he’s allowed to play again, and I thought in the offseason it was by far the best trade, during the season, for nothing. A sixth-round pick, which was absolutely insane.

“Look, I understand when he came into the league he was a better athlete as a quarterback, so what? That was the same with Steve Young, you know what I mean? That was the same with Randall Cunningham. And you know what? They can still get better. These guys have a tendency to get better. If this guy suddenly strikes, you’ve got a superstar on your hands.”

The Steelers and Chargers face off on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on CBS.
