With just a few minutes to go before the start of the season, Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is battling a calf strain that limited him from training on Thursday.

Wilson had already addressed the issue during training camp and the Steelers said they wanted to “take some precautionary measures,” ESPN reported.

Mike Tomlin told reporters Thursday that Wilson remains under investigation.

“We’ll see what it looks like tomorrow and go from there,” Tomlin said.

Due to health concerns, Justin Fields could be on alert for Sunday afternoon’s season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Bears’ 2021 first-round pick was acquired from the Steelers in a trade in March after three turbulent seasons in Chicago in which he struggled to live up to the Windy City’s expectations.

Despite the potential questions, Tomlin expressed his confidence in Fields.

“If that’s the case, I definitely feel very comfortable,” Tomlin said when asked about the possibility of Fields being in the starting lineup.

Fields also enjoys the trust of the receivers in Pittsburgh.

“I don’t know the specifics or what’s going on, but Russ is obviously a great competitor,” Van Jefferson told reporters. “He wants to be out there. If Justin needs to go out there, he’s more than willing to do that.”

“But at the end of the day, we just go out there and play. Whoever goes out there has to do their job. So both quarterbacks are capable of doing that on Sunday and we’ll just go with whoever’s out there.”

The Steelers are coming off a season in which they made the postseason but were knocked out by the Bills in the Wild Card Round.

Wilson was named the Steelers’ starter in August before the start of the regular season.
