Ryan Lochte acquitted of charges in Rio gas station fiasco

Ryan Lochte acquitted of charges in Rio gas station fiasco

Ryan Lochte is facing criminal charges after a Brazilian appeals court acquitted the American swimmer of charges related to an incident at a gas station in Rio de Janeiro during last summer’s Olympic Games.

Lochte claimed he and three other American swimmers were robbed at gunpoint in the early morning hours of August 14, 2016, shortly after the swimming competitions ended. After surveillance footage revealed a very different story, Lochte admitted to being drunk after a night of drinking, said he “exaggerated that story” and posted an apology on social media.

Lochte was charged with making false statements to authorities about a crime. However, an appeals court overturned that decision on Thursday, ruling that there was no violation of Brazilian law because the investigation into the incident was initiated by Rio police, not Lochte, and that his statements in the NBC interview were not false news.

“We are pleased that the court ultimately dismissed the charges against Mr. Lochte while appropriately recognizing that he committed no crime. It has been a long year, but in the end, justice has prevailed,” Jeff Ostrow, Lochte’s Florida-based attorney, said in a statement to USA Today.

Lochte’s ten-month suspension from the U.S. national swimming team for this incident ended on July 1.
