One of the most useful items for travelling in Tokyo (and Japan) is an IC transport card. Not only can it be used for travel on trains and buses, but it is also accepted as a means of payment in selected shops and restaurants. Last year, the general turnover of Tokyo’s two IC cards, Pasmo and Suica, was exposed indefinitely due to the global semiconductor shortage. This is a nuisance as sales are currently limited to monthly passes and special IC cards for foreign tourists.

Fortunately, the situation seems to be finally changing, as JR East will start selling its Suica cards again in the fall. As reported Tokyo ShimbunJR East is expected to resume sales of its registered Suica cards after receiving a sufficient supply of IC chips. “Registered cards” means that buyers must provide information such as name and phone number when purchasing.

In addition to this good news, JR East also plans to expand the availability of its Welcome Suica cards to foreign tourists by offering them to more Ekitabi Concierge Service counter.

In the meantime, there are no updates on the suspended sale of Pasmo cards, but we will keep you posted.
