The San Antonio Zoo’s new state-of-the-art fiesta-style entrance opened late last year.

The San Antonio Zoo can add another award to its impressive list: Newsweek named it the third-best zoo in the country at the magazine’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

Finalists for NewsweekCandidates for the competition will be chosen by a panel of experts from the publication, after which the selection will be put to a public vote to determine the ranking, the publication said.

“I am incredibly grateful for the tireless dedication of our zoo crew, whose exceptional care for animals and our community embodies the heart and soul of the San Antoni Zoo,” said Tim Morrow, CEO and president of the San Antonio Zoo, in a statement. “I feel very fortunate to be part of this 110-year-old legacy that elevates San Antonio and advances the conservation community. Together, we are shaping a future where wildlife thrives through conservation and the education we pass on to our children.”

The San Antonio Zoo was surpassed in the rankings by the North Carolina Zoo and the Memphis Zoo, which took first and second place respectively. Here are the top five zoos in the country, as determined by NewsweekReader:

  1. North Carolina Zoo, Asheboro, NC
  2. Memphis Zoo, Memphis, Tenn.
  3. San Antonio Zoo
  4. Brookfield Zoo, Chicago
  5. Denver Zoo, Denver

The recognition from the national publication is just the latest honor for the San Antonio Zoo. The park was named the Best Zoo in Texas 2024 by the Texas Travel Awards, and the News The zoo was also named Best Family Attraction for the fifth year in a row in the Best of San Antonio 2024 poll.

The praise comes as the zoo is making significant upgrades to its attractions and facilities, including the new, state-of-the-art Fiesta-style entrance and upcoming attractions such as an expanded Giraffe Savannah, Congo Falls and the Reston Event Center, scheduled to open in 2025.
