Sandbag sites open in Tampa Bay

Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine is located in the northwestern Caribbean Sea and has a high chance of developing. A tropical depression or storm is expected to form in the next one to two days as the system moves north toward the Gulf.

In several districts, sandbags are being filled before the storm.

Pinellas County

In anticipation of potential impacts, sandbags will be available at the 49th Street Neighborhood Center, 1617 49th Street South, on Monday, September 23, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday, September 24, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. A limit of 10 bags applies and proof of residency may be required.

Self-service sandbag area

Residents of unincorporated Pinellas County may pick up free, pre-filled sandbags at our self-service location adjacent to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2855 109th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (maximum of 10 sandbags per household). Municipal residents should check with their municipality for availability.

Availability: Sandbags are refilled on Fridays, usually between 7 and 9 a.m.

Note: Sandbags are only recommended for residents facing flooding of less than 15 inches from rain or high tide. Sandbags will not stop water completely, but they can reduce the amount of water entering your home. They do not protect against waves or storm surges that accompany larger storms.

In Dunedin, pre-filled sandbags (optimally filled to the right level for stacking and sealing in appropriate locations) will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, in the parking lot of the City of Dunedin’s Highlander Park, 903 Michigan Blvd, while supplies last. Once pre-filled bags are used up, sand and bags will be
available.The sandbag site is available to Dunedin City residents and business owners with proof of residency: driver’s license or current utility bill. There is a limit of 15 bags per resident or business owner. Sand, sandbags and shovels are available on site. For those with special needs
needs.

Citrus area

The district has four sandbag sites for citizens who want to protect themselves in advance of the storms expected later this week. The sites are set up at the following locations:

Homosassa Recreation Park

9530 S Parkside Ave, Floral City

Old Hernando Elementary School
2435 N Florida Ave, Hernando

Our staff will be on site and available to assist you at the following times:

Tuesday – 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Wednesday – 19:30 to 17:00
All locations remain open 24 hours a day for self-service (sand and bags provided).

Hernando

In preparation for possible storm impacts from Potential Tropical Cyclone 9, Hernando County government will open sandbagging stations at Linda Pedersen Park and Anderson Snow Park from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23, 2024. Sandbagging station hours during the week can be found in the list below.

A limited supply of sand and sandbags is available at the locations listed below. Please bring your own shovel. These self-service sandbag sites will remain open until weather conditions worsen.

Tips for properly filling and stacking your sandbags

Fill the bags half to two-thirds full

Overfilled bags lead to a leaky sandbag wall

Stack sandbags so that the seams between the bags are offset

Tuck the top of each bag under to ensure the bag is sealed by its own weight.

Hillsborough

In Temple Terrace, the city will set up a sandbag distribution site for residents at the sports complex located at 10369 US Highway 301 on Tuesday, September 25 from noon to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, September 26 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Residents are allowed a maximum of 10 sandbags per person. ID is required to verify residency.

Pasco

Polk County

No active sandbag operations currently.

Manatee County

Manatee County is preparing for possible more heavy rains this week.

Manatee County staff have completed maintenance on Lake Manatee Dam. All three mechanical gates are operational and the earthen gates have been reset to pre-Debby levels. Staff will continue to monitor conditions and will make decisions about further lowering the lake level based on NOAA forecasts in advance of the potential storm later this week.

Residents are encouraged to take all necessary precautions now to protect their property from potential flooding. The sandbag sites open so far will be supplemented by additional sites in at-risk areas. Open sites can be found at mymanatee.org/sandbags.

Sarasota County

No active sandbag operations currently.
