Saranac celebrates improvements at Scheid Park

SARANAC – Modernization of a popular park in Saranac is complete.

Officials attended a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, August 12, to celebrate the Scheid Park improvement project.

The park is located on the Fred Meijer Grand River Trail in Saranac. The village consulted with Fleis and VandenBrink on the project.

The cost was $654,370, but the village received a $300,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The project broke ground last October.

Improvements include the construction of a new restroom and snack building, improved accessibility to the youth ball fields and the redesign of the parking lot, according to a press release.

Locals will also find an ADA-friendly gathering space, new road markings and landscaping.

“We are very pleased with the improvements at the park,” said Saranac Treasurer Becky Straubel. “The improvements have not only improved the overall appearance and operation of the park, but have also addressed safety and ADA compliance deficiencies.”

Saranac Mayor Sharon Darby said the community has been “saving and waiting for the right opportunity” to upgrade Scheid Park.

“With the support of the DNR Trust Fund Grant, we have now come full circle,” Darby said. “We couldn’t be more proud of the improvements and enhanced features that have transformed the park and made for an even more enjoyable experience.”
